- ====[ Bulletin 1 -- New Files ]===================================
-
- Computer Connections PCBoard, Washington, D.C., 2400/1200
- (202) 547-2008 -- Public; (202) 547-7621 -- Limited Access
-
- Brief comments on some of the new files added to the system:
-
- [09-30-86]
-
- JCAL14.ARC 32768 09-30-86 Jewish <--> Gregorian calendar converter v1.4
- So, what was wrong with version 1.0? In any event, this is an updated
- version of the program and comes complete with a good doc file this time.
- U/L by Bob Weinstein.
-
- SLS_FCST.ARC 26112 09-30-86 Time series sales forecasting/ TP source only
- Projects sales by unit. U/L by Bill Asp.
-
- PCDBMS20.ARC 177091 09-30-86 Relational DBMS v2.0 now with calc fields
- PC-DBMS is a full-featured, relational DBMS. It is by no means as easy to
- use as File Express, but the latter is not relational. Features of PC-DBMS
- include:
-
- - Dynamically formatted full screen forms for data entry,
- retrieval and editing and for "fill in the blanks" query
- composition.
- - A query command that can retrieve selected records from
- one or two tables, optionally sorting them.
- - Dynamic files, i.e., the capability to create new,
- defined tables from query results.
- - A fast screen editor for command composition with
- previous command recall. The editor features word
- wrapping and flying reform.
- - A menu-based help system.
- - Files containing the data tables look just like the
- tables, facilitating import and export.
- - Indexing with automatic index update on data entry,
- deletion or modification. No operation requires
- existence of an index.
- - Optional use of color.
- - Integrated data dictionary but kept in its own file.
- - Entire dbms contained in one EXE file.
-
- The documentation is quite good and complete and the program is not at all
- crippled, to my knowledge. U/L by Loren Olson.
-
- TIMEDGET.ARC 1414 09-30-86 Choices in batch files with timed defaults
- Similar in some respects to TIME(R), though a bit simpler, this program
- simply pauses and sets one errorlevel if the spacebar is pressed and
- another if any other key is pressed or if 12 seconds elapse with no
- keypress. A useful batch file tool. U/L by Loren Olson.
-
- FORMFEED.ARC 478 09-30-86 Mem-res: formfeed and PrtSc with formfeed
- U/L by Octavian Refrano.
-
- [09-29-86]
-
- TIMEBOOT.ARC 2048 09-29-86 Time a re-boot in a batch file
- Interesting program. It's mem-res (takes less than 1/2K) and you set it to
- reboot your computer X hours/mins from now, up to 59 hours away. It works
- exactly as it should, but why would you want to do this? I suppose if I
- were feeling mean I could run it on this system .... nah, there have to be
- more practical uses for it than that. U/L by Tom Weyer.
-
- NECP5.ARC 1920 09-29-86 Pop-up menu for NEC P5 printer control
- U/L by Tom Weyer.
-
- PIBCRC.ARC 2304 09-29-86 Tabular CRC calc in Turbo for Xmodem
- Tabular method for CRC calculations implemented in Turbo Pascal. U/L and
- written by Philip Burns.
-
- [09-28-86]
-
- PIBMDOS.ARC 30208 09-28-86 Multitasker interface routines for Turbo Pasc
- Philip Burns has released the source code for some routines to interface
- several popular multitaskers to Turbo Pascal. Currently, interfaces are
- provided for:
-
- IBM's TopView (and MicroSoft Windows by emulation of TopView)
- Quarterdeck's DesqView
- Sunny Hill Software's TaskView
- SoftLogic's DoubleDos
-
- A demo program, showing use of the routines, is also provided. U/L and
- written by Philip Burns.
-
- ABORT.ARC 4096 09-28-86 Break out of program loops w/ source
- A program to trap the Control-C key and to abort the currently resident
- process (such as the DSI Loader). U/L by John Howard.
-
- IGNORE.ARC 6144 09-28-86 Ignore ECC codes when reading files v1.0
- Helps salvage disk files that have CRC or ECC errors. U/L by John Howard.
-
- DIFFL.ARC 15872 09-28-86 CP/M diffl ported to DOS/compare text files
- An old CP/M favorite by Richard Greenlaw, ported to DOS (v1.0 9/20/86), one
- of the better compare text files utilities, and includes C source. U/L by
- Ray Malitzke.
-
- AUTOMAXX.ARC 79872 09-28-86 DOS menu/shell program/formerly AUTOMENU III
- You're going to need a scorecard for this one. First there was Marshall
- McGee's AUTOMENU (v3.01 of which is still on this system -- I noticed an ad
- for 4.0 in PC Mag so I assume it has gone commercial). Then, a different
- author, William Smith, imitated the design of AUTOMENU but made some
- improvements while he was at it. That was here as AUTO3.ARC. He has now
- changed the name to AUTOMAXX and this is version 2.1 of that program. Got
- it?
- In any event, this is a good menu program, with a great deal of flexibility
- in setting up an environment for users. It is also a file manager and DOS
- shell. Major changes for this version, in addition to the shell
- capabilities, are the addition of a calendar and printer interface
- routines. For those who have already invested a great deal of time
- building a menu system with the earlier version, an easy upgrade procedure
- is provided. U/L by Paul Gorski.
-
- MAPMAKER.ARC 177152 09-28-86 Good map-making program
- A quote from the doc will have to suffice as I can barely find Europe on a
- map:
-
- MapMaker produces two common forms of quantitative maps; CHOROPLETH
- (Area Coloring) and GRADUATED CIRCLE, on an IBM/PC color monitor, and
- if desired, in black and white on a matrix printer.
-
- Any set of statistical values may be displayed for corresponding
- geographical areas. Map areas must be comprised of bounded units
- such as states, counties, census tracts, or areas delineated by the
- user. On any given map, only one variable is shown for each map unit.
-
- Choropleth maps display statistical variables by using a sequence of
- colors (maximum of 3). Circle maps represent data with proportionately-
- sized circles. Proper usage of both map forms is discussed in detail
- later in the manual. MapMaker can also save and later recall screen
- images without going through the create process.
-
- U/L by Dean Wood.
-
- [09-27-86]
-
- TINYLIST.ARC 14001 09-27-86 Very tiny print: up to 20K per page w/PAS
- You're going to need a magnifying glass to read the output from this one,
- but by using the tiniest print available on IBM/Epson printers and printing
- 2 columns per page, this sure gets a lot of text on each piece of paper.
- With TP source so you can modify for other printers.
-
- MAKEMEM2.ARC 28600 09-27-86 Create/List dBase 3 .mem files,bugs fixed
- This is ver 2 of both MAKEMEM and READMEM. Both can handle numeric
- variables. Bugs fixed described well in BUGFIX.TXT inside ARC. Allows
- your dBase pgms to communicate with the outside world by importing text as
- memory variables that your dBase program can process. I like these
- programs. Includes PARSE (clever, text file line manipulator), READMEM
- (show vars in MEM), CHKPRINT (checks printer ready). Description (and
- file, for that matter) from Pete Olympia's Darwin system.
-
- PRODOC24.ARC 117024 09-27-86 ProComm 2.4 doc without Epson formatting
- This file is NOT listed on a dir. The doc file in PRCM24B.ARC is formatted
- for an Epson or compatible. The version in this archive is plain ascii and
- should print on any printer, including a laser printer.
-
-
- ANSILABL.ARC 15360 09-27-86 Label generator for Citizen/Epson/IBM Gr 1.3
- ANSILABL generates custom-printed 1-Up 15/16" x 3-1/2" labels. You must
- have your ANSI.SYS or compatible console driver loaded via your CONFIG.SYS
- file. This program also assumes the user has a CGA card and color monitor.
- You can print up to four lines of text on the labels using the many
- different modes available from the Citizen / Epson / IBM Graphic printers.
- U/L and written by Steven Sanders.
-
- TP-SUBST.ARC 11264 09-27-86 Multiple phrase search/replace for TP source
- A specialized pattern search and replace facility for Turbo Pascal source
- code. It will take a list of find/replace pairs and apply those
- substitutions throughout an entire source program and all of its include
- files. SUBST actually parses the source code into Pascal identifiers so
- that substitutions will occur on whole words only, and will not affect
- string literals or comments. U/L by Craig Hulvey. PAS only.
-
- HGCIBM.ARC 7780 09-27-86 CGA Graphics on Hercules cards-untested
- U/L by Lewis Dozier.
-
- BASAID40.ARC 104080 09-27-86 BasicAid 4.0: Xref, Compress, etc. 9/86
- The venerable BasicAid xref and optimize package. Handles the new basic
- compilers and source code saved in any form. The author is no longer
- distributing the source, so EXE and DOC only in this archive.
-
- XONE2.ARC 9303 09-27-86 Make ARC from member file(s) v2 V.Buerg w/asm
- Vern Buerg did this program by special request, but it has general
- applicability. What it will do is make separate archives from one or more
- files in an archive. Thus:
- XONE TEST FILE.TXT
- will make a separate archive out of FILE.TXT. This is done without
- uncompressing the file, so it is fast as .... Vern has also included the
- assembler source which is well-commented and useful in learning a bit more
- about archive formats. U/L and written by Vern Buerg.
-
- [09-26-86]
-
- ACCTS22.ARC 95607 09-26-86 Home accounting/budget program v2.22
- Very minor changes to version 2.20, which was already on this system, this
- is a good, but by no means great, consolidated home accounting and budget
- system. U/L by Mark Rapp.
-
- NEW-MOVE.ARC 2165 09-26-86 MOVE util: wildcards/across devices/
- 09-26-86 excellent command line parsing: BEST?
- It figures. I just revised the "Best" list on this system a couple of days
- ago and look what shows up -- a strong contender for the best "move" file
- util. This one does everything done by NMOVE586 -- it handles wildcards,
- "moves" files across devices if necessary, etc. -- and it is even smaller,
- by a few bytes, than NMOVE. Plus, it will accept the following command
- line:
- MV file1 file2 file3 ... \subdir
-
- which would choke NMOVE. That's very nifty command line parsing. There is
- only one other difference: NMOVE requires you to use a /D switch to
- overwrite an existing file; this program overwrites by default unless you
- use a /P switch. I think I prefer NMOVE's approach, but six of one ....
- This is an excellent, little program.
-
- CSTUFF.ARC 7936 09-26-86 Miscellaneous MSC 3.0/4.0 routines
- It'll take me longer to describe each of these than it will for you to
- download them. A nice selection of little routines, in C and ASM. U/L by
- Don Conover.
-
- [09-25-86]
-
- GSETUP14.ARC 17664 09-25-86 Generic SETUP program for AT & clones v1.4
- Does essentially all the same things as IBM's SETUP program for the AT but
- does not require you to reboot your system as does IBM's and can be run
- from the hard disk. Very handy. U/L by Lee Winsor.
-
- TP-ARRAY.ARC 2048 09-25-86 Variable sized arrays in TURBO
- Allow array sizes to be defined dynamically as your program runs. U/L by
- Stephen Falatko.
-
- DISKFREE.ARC 10880 09-25-86 Show disk usage by subdir incl slack space
- Gives a nicely formatted display of all or specified subdirs on your disk,
- including files, and tells you total space usage per subdir, including
- slack space, and for the disk as a whole. U/L by Jay Robb.
-
- DB3STOCK.ARC 29696 09-25-86 Miscellaneous routines for dBase3/Clipper
- The name is misleading. This is not an inventory program written in dBase
- III. Rather, it's a set of "stock" routines that you can incorporate in
- your own programs, with a heavy emphasis on user interface. Source and
- Clipper-linkable object file provided. U/L by Bill Asp.
-
- RES86DOC.ARC 15616 09-25-86 Documentation for res86.arc disassembler.
- Better late than never, a DOS version of Ward Christensen's CP/M
- disassembler has been on this system for quite a while. Here's some
- documentation for it. U/L by Jack Velte.
-
- [09-24-86]
-
- EM3270.ARC 59392 09-24-86 TPascal 3270 emulation routines
- A set of procedures which allows full-screen editing patterned after the
- IBM 3270 family of terminals. U/L by John Gefaell.
-
- DOS32PAT.ARC 2466 09-24-86 Patch DOS 3.2 /new keybd and 3.1 fmttd disks
- 2 patches: (1) So that basic will work properly with the new, extended
- keyboard; (2) So that you can put DOS 3.2 on a DOS 3.1 hard disk without
- losing the files already on that disk. As far as I know, these are not
- "official" patches, at least not yet, so please take some care with them
- (i.e. don't patch your original DOS disk, for gosh sakes, and backup your
- hard disk before trying to install DOS 3.2 on it). U/L by Bill Andrus.
-
- AUTOPRC1.ARC 65664 09-24-86 Procomm 2.4 automatic script generator
- A routine to generate DOWNLOAD scripts (.CMD files) for ProComm version 2.4
- and greater. The .COM file can be executed right from with ProComm itself
- for on-the-fly .CMD file creation. v2.0, 9/86. U/L by Rich Schinnell.
-
- RECIPE.ARC 47741 09-24-86 Meal-Meister 1.0 Recipe Management System
- Not my cup of tea, so to speak, so a quote from the doc:
-
- "Meal-Meister is a menu-driven database system specially created and
- tailored to manage your recipes. With Meal-Meister, you can store, update,
- and print your recipes in a variety of formats. You can search for recipes
- using any combination of Title, Category, or Ingredient criteria. And you
- can have Meal-Meister automatically up- scale and downscale recipes to get
- the number of servings you need! Meal-Meister not only replaces the
- dog-eared, disorganized collection of index cards found in most kitchens,
- it gives you an invaluable tool for meal selection and preparation!"
-
- U/L by David Geerinck.
-
- SPEED.ARC 2944 09-24-86 Analyze CPU and memory performance of PC & AT
- Does a series of CPU and memory tests to help you benchmark the performance
- of a machine versus a standard PC. The approach taken here will give you
- much more realistic results than Norton's SI program, or other similar CPU
- tests. I think this is one of the best, simple performance benchmarkers I
- have seen. Between this and a good hard disk tester (e.g. Core's test or
- several others), you'll get a good approximation of how a machine will
- perform in actual use, much more quickly than you will with the more
- extensive PC Mag tests that are in BENCH.ARC.
-
- YACC.ARC 87800 09-24-86 YACC (DECUS PD version) for MS-DOS (w/src)
- LEX.ARC 121906 09-24-86 LEX (DECUS PD version) for MS-DOS (w/src)
- Adaptations of the Unix 'lex' (lexical analyzer from regular expression
- grammars) and 'yacc'(parser generator) for MS-DOS. The complete source is
- provided for both programs, in DeSmet C, as are executables. There is
- rather extensive documentation for the Lex program; for YACC, you're going
- to have to dig up a Unix manual or book as only the differences are
- documented.
- I hope I'm not about to have another round with AT&T's attorneys over
- this code (we did have some "discussions" over other code they believed to
- be proprietary earlier this year). Both archives indicate the source
- originated with DECUS (the DEC Users' Society) and has since been modified
- for DOS. The LEX documentation contains the following language:
-
- General permission to copy or modify, but not for
- profit, is hereby granted, provided that the above
- copyright notice is included and reference made to the
- fact that reproduction privileges were granted by DECUS.
-
- While there is nothing quite as express in the Yacc package, it is clearly
- identified as also having its origins in the DECUS source and is,
- therefore, presumably under the same distribution guidelines.
-
- U/L by Winston Llamas, but if push comes to shove, I take full
- responsibility for posting these programs.
-
- [09-23-86]
-
- PRCM24A.ARC 122424 09-23-86 ProComm 2.4 part 1 -- Main files
- PRCM24B.ARC 129229 09-23-86 ProComm 2.4 part 2 -- Documentation
- PRCM24C.ARC 25933 09-23-86 ProComm 2.4 part 3 -- CMD files/TEF/PRCMSORT
- U/L by Loren Olson. The WHATSNEW file for ProComm 2.4 is in Bulletin 4.
- Also there is a verbose listing of the archives in that bulletin as they
- may be organized slightly differently on this system than on others (as
- uploaded, there were duplicate files that I have deleted to save you
- download time).
-
- I have had some not very nice things to say about ProComm in the past.
- My prejudice stemmed from the first releases which were so heavy on bells
- and whistles (and I do mean that literally) that the program looked
- and sounded like an arcade game. Since Ymodem was introduced a few
- versions back, I, and several others, have dubbed the program "Slowcomm"
- because of how slowly it does Ymodem compared to PibTerm and the latest
- version of Qmodem.
-
- Well, the bells and whistles are under control. Alas, the Ymodem
- downloads are still slower than Pib and Qm, and I'm mystified as to why,
- but so it goes (the Ymodem uploads, actually, aren't bad at all).
-
- Still, there's a lot to like about this program. Like Pib, but unlike
- Qmodem, a full range of protocols are supported, both single file and
- batch. The implementation of Ymodem batch is partial, but probably a
- sensible compromise for MS-DOS: The Ymodem Block 0 filename and size are
- supported, but not the date and time (which is quite bizarrely done in
- Forsberg's full implementation). This approach is workable and fully
- compatible.
-
- Sliding windows kermit is also supported. I only wish I understood why
- folks were fond of that one. At least over regular phone lines, it's
- slower than Ymodem. A new "windowed" Xmodem (WXMODEM) is also supported.
- Cute, but again slower than Ymodem. When the 9600 bps modems take over
- with internal error correction, I'd bet on something closer to YMODEMG than
- either of these, but we shall see.
-
- In any event, the terminal emulations are good, the command language is
- very powerful (enhancements to that seem to be the major change in this
- revision), and all in all, it's a very professional program. It's also
- less disk and memory hungry than either PibTerm or Qmodem, no doubt thanks
- to the fact it is written in C rather than Turbo Pascal. Do wish they
- would speed up the Ymodem receives in the next release, but a very good
- program even now.
-
- Peruse the license, folks. This is neither "public domain" nor
- shareware. It's try-it-but-if-you-use-it-you'd-better-pay-for-it-or-else
- software. Wonder if that'll work?
-
- TCB.ARC 7168 09-23-86 C source code "beautifier" /EXE & DOC
- U/L by Steve Hite.
-
- QFONE222.TXT 2048 09-23-86 What's new with Qfonedit 2.22
- QFONE222.ARC 89088 09-23-86 Ver. 2.22 - Brendel's Qmodem FON editor
- U/L by Raymond Clements. Update (bug fixes) to Karl Brendel's utility to
- edit/sort/do everything to Qmodem 2.2's FON directory.
-
- [09-22-86]
-
- DOCASST.ARC 33106 09-22-86 Help documenting BASIC programs
- U/L by Terry Leckbee. Produces a variable listing and a bit more.
-
- DIR404.ARC 48128 09-22-86 Disk Directory Librarian v4.04, 9/14/86,w/PAS
- U/L by Bob Weinstein. Wes Meier's disk catalog program, written in Turbo
- Pascal, with the complete source code provided. Alas, no doc, but the
- program is easy enough to use that you shouldn't need one.
-
- SIGNMAKR.ARC 68096 09-22-86 Giant banner maker w/fonts, font manager
- U/L and written by Sam Lin. I can't believe I'm going to let yet another
- banner program stay on this system, but this one looks particularly good.
- The doc says it will support any printer, and a supplemental program also
- allows use and modification of multiple fonts. I must say I'm also
- prejudiced by the license which is as follows:
-
- These programs are distributed in the manner that the
- 'Freeware' concept should be; they are literally free! No
- strings attached. Copy 'em, distribute them; just please do
- not distribute altered copies, and PLEASE do not sell them!
- You got it for free, so others should, too.
-
-
- ADJRAM30.ARC 65152 09-22-86 Adjust ram disk size w/out losing data v3.0
- U/L by Loren Olson. A very impressive programming effort, but I'm going to
- stick with RDISK2. The advantage of this one is that you can change the
- size of your ram disk at any time without losing its contents. RDISK2 also
- allows changing the size of the vdisk without rebooting but you will lose
- whatever files are on it. But, the penalty you pay here is that the ram
- disk is always at least 64K. With RDISK2, you can reduce it to 0 if you
- wish. The other advantage here is that EMS ram disks are supported, but as
- the author candidly admits in his docs, the program uses so many EMS memory
- handles that you'll never be able to build one of decent size with this
- program and have enough left over to do anything else. The really good
- news is that both ASM source for the driver and C source for the adjustment
- program are provided, and there's some nice code in there. (BTW, the
- advantage of RDISK2 over SETRAM, another adjustable ram disk program, is
- that the former allows 64 dir entries while the latter is limited to 32).
-
- CATS18.ARC 20608 09-22-86 Prodn ver of fast & exc disk cat pgm
- CATSUTIL.ARC 26624 09-22-86 Utility & sort BAT files for CATS
- U/L by Pete Olympia. Very nice program. CATS simply reads floppy
- disks and outputs the results to a catalog file in a format that is easy to
- read and to manipulate -- both with an editor and with a database system.
- The CATSUTIL arc really just shows what you can do, in this case
- manipulating the catalog file with Vern Buerg's wonderful SORTF program
- (not included, but on this system in SORTF215.ARC). Together, they make a
- simple, but powerful, cataloging system.
-
- DBASEBBS.ARC 15360 09-22-86 dBASE 3 BBS database with programs
- U/L by Dean Wood. For those of you who are really BBS addicts and want to
- make a science out of it ....
-
- GUDLUK14.ARC 23552 09-22-86 Compare two files side by side rev 1.4
- U/L by Mike Focke. An update to a good file viewer/compare program,
- an earlier version of which is described in more detail below.
-
- PC-TUNES.ARC 22528 09-22-86 9 tunes w/short & long versions for .bats
- U/L by Brian Miller. If my computer started singing to me at the end of
- batch files, as this program would help it do, I'd remove its larynx. But,
- for those of you more left-brained than I ...
-
- [09-21-86]
-
- CHECMATE.ARC 198656 09-21-86 Home & small biz accting/8 accnts/v1.02
- From the docs, an edited summary of features:
-
- - Supports up to eight accounts simultaneously
- (total number of accounts is limited only by disk space)
- - Supports Checking and Savings accounts
- - Up to 32,767 transactions may be active per account
- - Prints reports in standard format or in Borland Intl's
- Traveling SideKick (tm) format
- - Reports and Checks may be printed in PICA, ELITE or
- CONDENSED print
- - Transactions may be edited or printed and search criteria
- may be specified on ANY field in the transaction
- - Check printer supports continuous feed AND standard checks
- - Allows 100 predefined transactions that can be called up
- at a keystroke
- - Provides a financial calculator for quick figures on
- loans, regular deposit accounts, and compounding
- - Helps you reconcile your accounts when your statements
- arrive, and prints a complete report of outstanding
- transactions
- - Includes extensive, context sensitive on-line help
-
- Released 9/9/86, v1.02. U/L by Brian Miller. This looks to be one of the
- more sophisticated "checkbook" packages, really almost a mini-accounting
- system. Given that it also prints checks on your own forms (nothing
- special needed), you may want to look at this one if you use your computer
- for that task (I don't).
-
- DISKUT.ARC 42614 09-21-86 5.25" Floppy Util 1.0/Edit Fat,Unerase,etc.
- For floppies only! Looks like a powerful disk editor, with some additional
- Norton-like capabilities. U/L by Loren Olson.
-
- JOHARI.ARC 18304 09-21-86 A personality windows program - try it!
- MYERS.ARC 33792 09-21-86 Personality program & aptitude analyst
- Neither likely to stay on this system long, so grab if you wish. No doc
- for MYERS at all. Untried. U/L by Bill Asp.
-
- QFONE221.ARC 89088 09-21-86 QFONEDIT v2.21, THE QModem util, rel 9/19/86
- QFONE221.TXT 2048 09-21-86 Contents of QFONE221.ARC -- by Karl Brendel
- A message from the author of these, Karl Brendel, on the Software Society,
- says that he has already found a "minor" bug and another version is
- imminent. Better to wait, huh? U/L by Bob Weinstein.
-
- WAKEUP.ARC 1792 09-21-86 Enter a command at any preset time, K. Graham
- Feed any command line you specify to DOS at the time you specify. The
- program is memory-resident and leaves behind a 900 or so byte thingamajig
- every time you run it, so you may want to MARK/RELEASE it. U/L by Bob
- Weinstein.
-
- PIBPCPSC.ARC 1792 09-21-86 PC Pursuit script for PIBTERM 3.2.5

- E88-V3.ARC 29440 09-21-86 Small, fast, programmer's editor v3.00
- A very nice programmer's editor -- very fast and small. Quite a few new
- features added, including search/replace and limited cut and paste, but
- it's still no competition for the larger programs of this kind like QEDIT
- or EDWIN (or IBM's wonderful Personal Editor II). U/L by Loren Olson.

- Dunford's excellent program to allow you to execute a command repeatedly
- over all or part of your drive's tree structure. v1.01 allows
- specification of alternate drive. Also, an alternate version of the
- program is provided that uses an undocumented DOS function to execute
- internal DOS commands. It's faster but may not work on all compatibles.

- SEE.ARC 43008 09-21-86 Simple, small, text-oriented word processor
- Something of a come-on for a more, full-featured, commercial word
- processor, but the BBS version is quite functional and looks pretty good.
- For text, as opposed to programs -- that is, this is a word processor, not
- a programmer's editor. Ouput files are NOT ascii. Good tutorials are
- provided and the documentation is also adequate. Read the doc; you have to
- put a SET string in your environment to tell the program where its files
- are. True formatting of printed output and a spell-checker only come with
- the commercial version ($150). Version 0.5. U/L by Brian Miller.

- WSSI300.ARC 99328 09-21-86 Floppy & Hard disk catalog prgm v3.00/v good
- An update to an already very good disk catalogue system. Update notes from

-
- Added support for .ARC files, WSSICNF and WSSIDIR
- environment variables, default file names changed by
- appropriate input/output to file, word-tabbing and insert
- mode indicator in add-comments menu, enhanced selecting for
- comment and category. Shortened the .EXE file by removing

- D86.ARC 57216 09-21-86 Debugger by immodest A86 author v2.15
- The "Howard Cosell" of programming has issued a revised version of his
- macro assembler and a new program, a debugger about which, of course, he is
- equally immodest. If you can stand the bragging, the programs are quite
- powerful. The assembler is not MASM compatible but the documentation now
- gives some conversion tips. The debugger need not be used with A86 and it
- looks very good, though this just isn't my area.

-
- WLOG.ARC 41984 09-21-86 WorkLog/Track/Prepare Statements/Time Billing
- In contrast to A86, read the following modest description from the doc:
-
- "Anything you can do with WORKLOG, you can do with a decent spreadsheet
- program. But if all you want to do is keep logs of time spent on client
- projects, calculate the amounts to be charged based on hourly rates you
- specify, and print monthly records of time spent on the projects, then
- you'll find WORKLOG a more efficient and, I hope, elegant solution."
-
- People who bill for their time may find this useful, but I still haven't
- found a really good pd/shareware time billing program that's easy to use,
- flexible, mem-res (this isn't and I need one that I can pop-up to record
- what I'm doing and then let me get back to work), has good reporting
- capabilities, and is fast. If someone wants to write one that meets those
- specs (and more that I'd be happy to provide), you'd have a helluva product
- and my thanks.

- An update to one of the best "readability" analyzers. There's nothing in
- the documentation to indicate what they've changed and when I ran the
- program I did not see anything new. I wish this program weren't so slow,
- but it has a lot of work to do I guess and it does it very well. Of all

- QFILER22.ARC 67609 09-20-86 QFILER 2.2: now links with ARCA, ARCE, ARCV
- 09-20-86 & text editor of your choice; optional link
- 09-20-86 via FCDISK w/FILECAT/ Excellent sweep utility
-
- This is the official release of QFILER 2.2 -- 2.1E was technically a
- "beta". Kenn provided a good paragraph that sums up QFILER for those of
- you who are considering it for the first time:
-
- "QFILER 2.2 - a versatile 2-window file manager/DOS Shell; now includes
- links to your favorite editor or word processor, plus links to Buerg's
- ARCA, ARCE and ARCV programs. Looks and works like Neidert's FFM, but
- faster and with many additional features and functions. Normal COPY,
- DELETE and RENAME are supported as well as MOVE, set/unset HIDDEN and
- READONLY attributes, set file TIMEDATE timestamp, invoke PRINT.COM and
- LIST.COM from within the program, link with FILECAT file catalog database
- files and much more. A powerful disk file manager."
-
- Actually, that barely skims the surface of the power of this program. A
- few days ago, I decided to do some housecleaning on another machine here. I
- just loaded up QFILER and went roaming through the file tree, erasing files
- I didn't need, copying others to where they really belonged, arc'ing some
- to make space, etc. When I needed to, I shelled out of the program for a
- moment, and then popped right back in. The program is just a joy to use.
-
- The changes from 2.1E are quite minor, but grab it again anyway, as a few
- minor bugs were fixed and a few minor improvements made.
-
- Of the sweep-type file managers, QFILER has become my favorite. For a
- command-driven file handler (when you don't need the ability to tag
- multiple files and don't want menus and function keys), try Chris Dunford's
- FILER221. Between the two, you have everything you need and no reason to
- buy one of the many commercial DOS shell/file manager programs.

- FE377-3.ARC 94252 09-20-86 \user-supported DBMS now available / DOCS
-
- This is far and away the best shareware database manager and I have raved
- about it enough times in the past that I won't go on at length again. It
- is full-featured, easy to use, AND uncrippled. The Expressware folks,
- publishers of this program, give "shareware" a good name -- would that the
- same were true for all.
-
- In any event, the update is VERY minor (and thankfully, we did get update
- notes from the author this time):
-
- * A new command line option, /L, has been added to accomodate
- printers that insist on doing a line feed with every carriage return
- that is sent to it (resulting in a double spaced report or labels).
- Typing a /L after the FE to start the program will cause File Express
- to only send out a carriage return after each line printed instead of
- both a carriage return and a line feed.
-
- Fixed bug in Merge section.
-
- Fixed bug in Sort section that would occur when sorting numeric
- fields with deleted records.
-
- The third archive, containing the docs, looks barely changed at all, and
- you can save yourself (and this system) some time by passing on that if you
- already have the 3.7x docs from an earlier release.

- ADVBAS26.ARC 45312 09-19-86 v2.6 new commands for BASIC compiler
- Excellent library of assembler routines than can be called by your Quick
- Basic or other compiled basic programs. Source code provided to
- contributors. Tom's update notes for the latest:
-
- ADVBAS 2.6, 9/19/86:
- XQPRINTD will allow you to print to the screen using direct screen
- writes. This is the fastest possible print method, but will produce
- snow on some color displays if you are printing to the active display
- page. SCRRESTP and SCRSAVEP will allow you to save and restore any
- screen page to/from an array. SCRRESTPD and SCRSAVEPD will do the
- same using direct screen reads/writes (see note at XQPRINTD).
- SETCOMM will allow you to reset the parameters on an open communi-
- cations "file" without having to close the file (and thus drop the
- DTR signal) first. In addition, it lets you set the baud rate to
- speeds beyond the normal limitation of 9600 bps. An error in DMPRINT
- was fixed.

- PKX32A11.COM 51200 09-19-86 Katz's ARChive utils: PKXARC 3.2 & PKARC 1.1
- 09-19-86 COM file will self-extract and create new
- 09-19-86 programs and documentation -- v. fast programs
-
- Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery; it can also produce very good
- programs (and a little bit of competitive spirit probably doesn't hurt
- either -- is it a coincidence that these new programs were released right
- after new versions of ARCA and ARCE?). Phil Katz has adopted the faster
- and more efficient LZW crunch algorithm that Vern Buerg and Wayne Chin have
- been using in their ARCA program. As a result, PKARC 1.1 is very fast --
- maybe even faster than ARCA, but I'll leave extensive testing to others if
- they wish -- and produces archives almost the same size (a tiny bit bigger
- in the few I've tried). It's a very impressive piece of work. PKXARC now
- has a test archive integrity function and also claims to be faster than the
- earlier version, a claim I didn't check (a 5% speed improvement, which is
- claimed, would be hard to verify except on very large archives). The
- command line syntax of both programs still seems awkward to me, but I don't
- know what hurdles Katz had to go through with Lattice C 3.0, the compiler
- he used.
-
- Anyway, the author's update notes
-
- PKARC version 1.1, 9-12-86
- --------------------------
- Enhanced Ziv-Lempel compression was added to PKARC. The enchanced
- crunching algorithm provides superior compression ratios over the
- traditional crunching algorithm used in SEAware's ARC program. Files
- crunched with the enhanced crunching algorithm are up to 20% smaller, yet
- still fully compatible with ARC and PKXARC.
-
- File buffering has been drastically improved, resulting in faster
- compression, especially on floppy disks.
-
- The improved buffering and other optimizations have resulted in a twofold
- increase in archiving speed over PKARC version 1.0. [Sysop's note: I'm
- having a little trouble with that claim. Version 1.0 was quite fast; 1.1
- is faster, but twice as fast???? Not in my limited testing].
-
- Changes in PKXARC version 3.2
- -----------------------------
-
- The archive test function "/t" was added to PKXARC. This function tests
- the integrity of the archive without extracting the files to disk.
- Specifically, the CRC for each file is computed and compared against the
- correct value stored in the archive.
-
- Extraction speed has been increased by 5% for most files.

-
- ARCE206.ARC 8475 09-18-86 Buerg's ARC Extract 5.x compat/indiv files
- 09-18-86 Version 2.06 Wildcards/Redirection/Fast
-
- Vern Buerg and Wayne Chin have updated two of their archive utilities (ARCV
- remains at 1.15). They estimate a 9% speed improvement in ARCA, and as it
- was already the fastest thing going, that ain't hay. ARCA should also,
- usually (not always), produce even smaller files than earlier versions.
- Plus, the error-handling has been improved. I noticed immediately that it
- handled having the target disk become full much better than earlier
- versions did (it happens to me on ram disks all the time). ARCE has also
- had its speed increased and error-handling improved.
-
- [NOTE: New versions of PKXARC and PKARC were released AFTER the next
- paragraph was written --- see above].
-
- I've done detailed comparisons of ARCA and PKARC10 in the past. ARCA now
- enjoys an even greater speed advantage; PKARC implements additional
- capabilities. As for ARCE and PKXARC, the latter is still a bit faster;
- ARCE is smaller and has less complicated command line parsing. I still end
- up using all 4 programs for different tasks (sigh). I also use ARCH538 for
- it's -P function, that unlike ARC itself, takes wildcards for both the arc
- and the files inside. Maybe Vern and Wayne will write an ARCP one of these
- days so I can get rid of that one (and so that Kenn Flee can integrate it
- into Qfiler).

- There was no doc on PC Mag's IRS when I downloaded this, but the source
- code will tell you all you need to know (Alt-C is the hot-key, and the
- arrow keys on your numeric keypad change the month/year displayed). Consult
- PC Mag itself for additional information. Note (for the lawyers):

- TT096.ARC 63104 09-18-86 Turbo-Term,v0.96,small/fast/Qmodem-like comm
- An update. I guess TT must be a beta; TT094 came with no docs (except for
- the brief message Pete Olympia put in the arc) and TT096 is similarly
- undocumented. So ... I have absolutely no idea what has changed. TT is
- quite full-functioned and VERY small (it's 2 files are just over 80K). The
- single file Ymodem seems fairly robust and fast; it's batch Ymodem receives
- need work, and there's no batch send implemented (yet?). There are also
- some rough edges to the program (a nice way of saying it's got some bugs).
- But, it's functional. If you like Qmodem but want a program that's about
- 1/3rd the size with most of the features, take a look. U/L by Lee Winsor.

- CFMT11.ARC 17024 09-17-86 C-FORMAT v1.1: Fast, floppy formatter 9/11/86
- An update that changes the way the command line is parsed. I'm very leary
- of these programs for disks on which I keep important data. I suppose I
- should also say something nice about DOS 3.2 for a change: The way the
- FORMAT program ticks off heads and cylinders is useful and keeps you amused
- while the program does its work. In any event, this program's here if you
- want it. I tried it and it works, but I won't use it.
-
- DISKVR42.ARC 50630 09-17-86 Disk Cover program v4.2/expands ARC/LBR

- Gripe, gripe, gripe about undocumented updates.

-
- STYLED.ARC 68114 09-17-86 Interesting writing style analyzer v1.0
- If I ran STYLED on this bulletin, I would abandon the task in despair. Oh
- well ... This is a little different than the other style analyzers on the
- system. This one doesn't calculate a "readability" score based on some
- variation of Rudolf Flesch's test, which rewards monosyllabic people who
- are fond of very short sentences (you'd hate this one, wouldn't you,
- Rudy?). Rather, STYLED attempts to find instances of passive voice,
- wordiness, etc., and also gives you a schematic of your punctuation so you
- can judge the rhythm of your writing. Oh yes, it finds long words for you,
- too (defined as more than 10 characters -- good grief, I'm in trouble!).
- The program is slow, but you may have fun with it. I guess the
- documentation is meant as an example of good writing. While the grammar
- may be perfect, it reminds me of Dick and Jane -- 2 sentence paragraphs, 5
- words per sentence, and the like. Is that what good writing really is?, he
- asked rhetorically, a word the program would barf on because it has 12
- letters (but it would like barf -- that only has 4!). By the way, while I
- think this one is interesting, most of you will probably find MAXI-READ
- more useful.

- an additional 64K of mem in the area that DOS normally reserves for display
- memory but only uses if you have an EGA, THEN and only then will this
- program allow you to have useable DOS space of 704K. Most boards (the

- BPATCH.ARC 29952 09-15-86 "DUMP" type utility for UNIX - excellent

- on your Unix system, the code may be of interest. As Ken Brown rightly
- said in the description, it looks excellent. You'll need 'curses' to

- down a column. Each serial date will be given for the same day of the

- QF21E.ARC 69120 09-14-86 QFILER 2.1E: now links with ARCA, ARCE, ARCV
- Kenn Flee has done an absolutely excellent job of integrating Vern Buerg's
- archive utilities with this sweep-type program. You can point to a file
- and ARCV it, thereby getting a verbose list of its contents. You can
- extract all or some of the files almost as easily. And, building an
- archive from only some of the files in your current dir is a piece of cake
- -- just mark 'em with Qfiler and let ARCA do its work on the marked files
- only. All in all, just a joy to use -- a very clean implementation of DOS'
- shell capabilities.
- QFILER has become my sweep utility of choice. As noted in earlier
- reviews, QF also lets you shell to almost any editor from within the
- program, and also links via FCDISK to Kenn's excellent FILECAT program.
- The "BOB" list (Bulletin 8) is seriously overdue for revision. QF will be
- on it next time around.
- Note: All of Vern's archive utilities are on this system at the top of
- Dir 2. To take full advantage of this new version of QFILER, make sure you
- have the 3 noted above.

- xx" at the DOS prompt, where xx is the (hex) interrupt number. e.g. to
- "hear" the clock, try "NOISE 08". Assembler source included. Illustrates

- LQALL10.ARC 104320 09-14-86 LQ 1.0 /Letr Qual & Fonts/Epson/C-Itoh/others
- I can't compare this to some of the other similar programs, like IMPRINT
- 1.21, as those all require an Epson. What caught my eye about this one was
- that it also supported the C-Itoh Prowriter, which is what I happen to
- have. It does a nice job -- quite a few fonts are supported and the
- package is quite easy to use. But, sloooooooooow...... Not the program's
- fault, I guess. It takes it 3 uni-directional passes for each line to give
- the high quality output that it produces.
- The program can be configured to support almost any printer, but you'll
- need to dig out your manual and fill in the escape codes. Config files for
- the Epson and the C-Itoh are provided.

- FAT.ARC 17408 09-14-86 Chris Dunford's FAT list utility v1.02 9/13
- Authors like Chris Dunford make this bulletin too easy by providing brief,
- accurate descriptions of their programs:
-
- " FAT is a simple program that can be used to display the chain of clusters
- (disk allocation units) that belong to a disk file, to determine which file
- "owns" a specified cluster or sector, and to display general information
- about a disk.
-
- FAT is a passive program, that is, it does not perform any functions that
- alter disk data. It is an inquiry program only."
-
- In function, FAT is similar to the CHAIN and OWNER programs (see below),
- but actually provides quite a bit of additional information and it is
- well-documented (no such for the other 2). Source code not included. U/L

- PSEARCH3.ARC 66283 09-11-86 Super-Search 3.0/pwrful file/text search util
- Norm Patriquin has gotten very professional at this -- he even includes a
- description file to use in bulletins like this (or on CIS, I suppose).
- Anyway, to quote that:
-
- PSEARCH 3.0 -- If you have ever lost track of a file or needed to
- locate one containing specific text, PS IS FOR YOU! A powerful File
- locator that will locate files based on a filename you enter, or
- text data you are looking for. Shows matching text within files.
- V3.0 finds files by sound-alike names and in ARC files too! Use
- PEAK to scan 123 .WKS files. Menus, HELP, Colors, plus many other
- features.
-
- Actually, the changes to version 3.0 are quite minor, but this is an
- excellent program and worth a look. There are a load of commands.
- Patriquin provides sample batch files to use rather than memorizing them,
- and the program can also be run in menu-driven mode. Those of you who use
- CED/PCED will quickly realize that the better approach is to find the
- commands you need and create CED synonyms for them. Note: Since version
- 2.0, Norm has disabled a few of the commands in the non-registered version.
- The crippling is quite minor, but it is, alas, there.

- HDTST273.ARC 69920 09-10-86 Throughly test HD for bad clusters v2.73
- This file is NOT listed on a download directory, but is available. The
- reason for not listing it is that I would prefer that you read this before
- using the program.
-
- HDTEST v2.73 is one of the most powerful disk testing tools that I have
- ever come across. If there's a bad sector anywhere on your disk, this
- program is likely to find it. Unlike Norton's DT, or the Mace Utilities or
- other disk testers, which merely do a read of every cluster on your disk,
- HDTEST writes 20 different test patterns to every cluster on the disk and
- makes sure they can be read correctly. This INCLUDES clusters that are
- currently occupied by your files, yet, unlike low level scan/verify
- programs, this program will not destroy any of your files (unless, of
- course, one of your files is, in fact, sitting on a bad cluster, at which
- point the program will try to save it, but may well fail).
-
- So far, so good, right? Well, yes, but this program will keep your disk
- working constantly for 2-5 hours, depending on the size of the DOS
- partition and the speed of this disk. If your disk is marginal, that kind
- of torture can easily push it over the edge.
-
- Download if you wish, but please use with care.

- WAMPSUP.ARC 41567 09-09-86 \programming language, but it's FREE\ Sup EXE
-
- An excerpt from the doc will give you some idea what this is:
-
- Ward's Automated Menu Package Using Microcomputers (WAMPUM) is a
- full-featured, menu-driven implementation of the dBASE III
- programming language. It is both an application development tool and
- an end-user data base management system with one significant
- difference: it's free. You do not have to own dBASE III to use this
- version of WAMPUM. Yet WAMPUM you can perform virtually all of the
- functions supported by dBASE III within the simple menu system which
- is WAMPUM.
-
- Key features include:
-
- * Creation and use of dBASE III-compatible data bases
- * Field types include: Char, Numeric, Date, Logical, Memo
- * Creation and use of up to 5 B-Tree Indexes per .DBF file
- * Add, Edit, Delete, & Undelete Records in any .DBF file
- * Display, List and Print Records from any .DBF file
- * 10 Data Entry Screen Formats tailored to any .DBF file
- * Creation and use of dBASE III-compatible reports & labels
- * Creation and use of WAMPUM "mail merge" form letters
- * Relation of second data base by key for any output format
- * Full-featured copy utilities to import & export any data
- * Creation of printer templates to support up to 10 fonts
- * Library of preformatted output forms with sort & select
- * Library of edit-checks tailored to any .DBF file system
- * Library of macros tailored to any WAMPUM application
- * Calculated fields using standard dBASE expressions
- * File and index packing to restore damaged data bases
- * Automated Selection Assist for complex Boolean searches
- * Boolean searches of dBASE III-compatible MEMO fields
- * Audit Trail / Transaction Logging for multi-user tasks
-
- Pete Olympia has had a first look at this one and was impressed. While
- noting that some error-trapping and screen-writing routines could be
- improved, Pete indicates that the program does what it claims (which is
- quite a lot). U/L by Philip Burns, and quite an upload at that. Thanks,

- in the TEXT subdirectory and any subdirectory beneath \TEXT in your subdir
- tree. Starting at root with XT \ DEL *.BAK would erase all BAK files on

- and PC Mag's SWEEP, although it processes the subdirs in a somewhat
- different order (it tends to go to the bottom on the tree and work back,

- LIST60G.ARC 18688 09-07-86 Buerg's excellent! file LISTer v6.0G 9/07/86
- 09-07-86 Full-screen ascii or binary file viewer
- 09-07-86 w/scrolling, find, hex display & much more
- As noted here a week ago when LIST 6.0F was released, that version was a
- major revision to Vern Buerg's wonderful program. Not surprisingly, a few
- "glitches" showed up. Equally unsuprising, Vern has promptly fixed them
- (we should get such support from Ashton Tate and Lotus -- but we don't).
- Here are the changes:
-
- Version 6.0g, Sept 4, 1986
- - cosmetic corrections to Help screen
- - increase data buffer to reduce "jumpy" display
- - remove some tweaking of the cursor shape
- - default to retrace testing off (M on)
- - improve readability of binary files in ASCII display mode
- by changing handling of EOF character; this also solves
- a problem with files whose last record does not contain
- a cr/lf. Remember, LIST expects "records" to have CR and/or LF.
-
- LIST 6.0F has broken every record ever set on this system for the number of
- times downloaded in a week, and it well deserves it. Grab the update and
- enjoy this excellent program. U/L and written by Vern Buerg.

- LITLBOK2.ARC 65280 09-07-86 Flee's address book v2.0: now has 2 fields
- 09-07-86 for phone nums & ascii export: excellent!
- Speaking of support, Kenn Flee has responded to a couple of suggestions
- made here and taken an already very good program and made it even better.
- In commenting on 1.1, this bulletin said it was a little gem of a name and
- address database. Two suggestions were made: (1) That there be fields for
- both home and office phones; and (2) That it would be nice to be able to
- generate an ascii report to disk so that the data could be exported to
- other databases. Kenn has done the first and gone several times better on
- the second: The program supports disk file output in 4 formats: Same as
- when printed; comma delimited; each field on a line by itself; and fixed
- length (spreadsheet style). Perfect. U/L and written by Kenn Flee.
- Includes a utility to convert 1.1 address books to 2.0 format.

- ZOO120.ARC 57600 09-07-86 Fast archiver 1.20/Not compatible w/SEA's ARC
- This program has been made even faster and produces even smaller archives.

- time than either PKARC10 or ARCA 1.18, and extracts just slightly slower
- than PKXARC 2.5 and faster than ARCE 1.18 (sic -- probably meant 1.24). I
- have no reason to doubt the tests. ZOO is a very impressive program.

- ATO500.ARC 107648 09-07-86 /Version 5.0 of ATO program for CompuServe
- "AUTOSIG is a program written specifically for CompuServe Special Interest
- Group use. It provides an automatic way of processing SIG messages that is
- quick and economical.
-
- The major features of AUTOSIG (ATO) are:
- - automatic dialing and access to CompuServe (CIS)
- through local, Tymnet, or Telenet nodes
- - automatic downloading of SIG messages
- - automatic retrieval and transmission of Email messages
- - file transfer using CIS "B" protocol
- - user defined program Function keys
- - full screen editor for composing messages offline
- - automatic transmission of your messages
- - offline display, printing, and saving of SIG messages"
-
- I am not a CIS user so I just have no way to evaluate this program. But,
- it was written by Vern Buerg, and that should be recommendation enough.

- This is a very powerful group of programs, exceptionally useful for dealing
- with a disk that has developed a few bad sectors. Full asm source is
- provided, and you'll need to look at that as that's all the documentation
- you get (it's really enough). Be careful with the MARK program: Like any

-
- COPYTREE.ARC 32200 09-06-86 Excellent XCOPY replacement: COPYs or
- 09-06-86 MOVEs files or an entire tree structure 8/86
- If I summarize all the features of this program, it will take you longer
- to read than to download it, and I do highly! recommend that you download
- it. Much too briefly, this program will copy or move files that meet your
- selection criteria and will traverse subdirectories while doing so,
- creating subdirs as necessary on the target disk as well (if you wish).
- Selection file criteria include new files only, so this can be used as a
- backup util. Furthermore, it will pause if the target disk is full, and in
- addition to the usual option of allowing you to insert a fresh disk, you
- can shell to DOS and format a new diskette if necessary. In short, this
- program is a joy -- much more powerful than either DOS 3.2's XCOPY or
- REPLACE or the 2 combined. Comparisons to PCOPY by Norm Patriquin are
- inevitable but I'm going to resist, except to say that this program has
- fewer selection criteria, but is also much smaller (only 20K vs 56K for
- PCOPY), and the DOS shell option is truly unique and powerful. For
- different tasks, you'll probably want to have both.

- reviews, this is a very professional and full-featured backup utility,
- particularly useful for those backing up one hard disk to another or who

- Some pretty major changes to a program that grows more powerful and
- full-featured with each new release (and there are a LOT of new releases).
- 9.20 added sliding windows Kermit, accomplished by shelling to
- PCKERMIT.EXE, the same technique used by RBBS and other BBS systems, so

- - Made a couple of other minor improvements.
-
- As you can see, the changes are very minor indeed, but this is an

- TFIND.ARC 22272 09-05-86 Find text w/regular expressions (K&R FIND)
- This is version 1.0 of a new utility by Chris Dunford, who describes it
- in the excellent documentation as follows:
-
- "Tfind is a text-finding filter that is based on the syntax of the
- Kernighan & Ritchie software tool "find" (which was in turn based on the
- UNIX utility, grep). It uses a fairly powerful subset of the class of text
- patterns known as "regular expressions".
-
- Tfind has been extended over the K&R find in that: it accepts multi-line
- patterns; it is (default) case insensitive (which can simplify pattern
- expressions); and it can display line numbers for matched lines.
-
- For simple searches (i.e., literal strings), I recommend using FGREP, which
- is MUCH faster and has greater versatility of display."
-
- Source code is not included (drat), but this looks to be an excellent tool
- to add to your arsenal of unix-like tools that have been ported to DOS,
- including Chris's own FGREP program (currently FGREP130.ARC). U/L and

- LBLMKR60.ARC 103808 09-04-86 Diskette Label Maker 6.0 8/10/86

- 1. Automatically reads and prints all file names.
- 2. Handles sub-directories.
- 3. Allows entry of a disk name.
- 4. Allows either 4 or 8 lines of comments depending on which version you
- are running.
- 5. Prints on 3 1/2" x 15/16" or 4" x 1 7/16" labels.
- 6. Prints 1 to 4 labels as necessary.
- 7. Print multiple labels with one input.
- 8. Permits you to print only the disk name, list of sub-directories, and
- comments.
- 9. Allows you to edit the title and comments for a label.
- 10. Allows you to configure your program to match your system."
-
- BASIC source code is provided so you can customize to some extent, for
- example, to support additional printers. I'll stay with DISKVR41 (see
- below) because it expands arcs and libraries, but the larger comment field
- here and the support of gummed labels (DISKVR really prints disk jacket
- inserts on plain paper that you just stuff in the diskette jacket) may make
- this program useful for many of you. U/L by Loren Olson.

- XT286.ARC 18432 09-03-86 IBM'S New XT/286 Announcement
- I cannot believe that IBM has done it again. They've put an AT in an XT
- box and did not, as some suspected, cripple it with fewer slots (there are
- 8 -- 5 16-bit and 3 8-bit) or a slower CPU speed (6 MhZ 0 wait states is
- probably just as fast as the current AT's 8 MhZ 1 wait state). BUT, this
- new machine comes with a 20 megabyte, 85ms average access time hard disk.
- That's too slow for an AT-class machine (38 ms is "standard" for a real AT,
- and many folks buy faster ones) and it may well be too small (32 meg is
- becoming the minimum). And, it appears, that the slow 20 megger is bundled
- with this ATjr so you're stuck with it. All for $3,995, much more than you
- would pay for an AT clone with a faster, larger hard disk. C'mon Big Blue,

- =====[ Qmodem 2.2 ]==================================
- Note: You must take at LEAST the first 2 Qmodem archives even if you have
- an older version. You must run the new QINSTALL and CNVRTFON programs. I
- strongly recommend that you take the doc file as well to understand the
- changes and properly follow the installation procedures, although the
- on-line help in both the install program and in Qmodem itself is
- excellent. This is NOT a beta; it is an official release by John Friel.
- You should destroy Qmodem 2.1 if you have it as that was never an official
- release.

- QM22-DOC.ARC 44430 09-02-86 Communications/Fast/Sleek \ Doc File
-
- I wish I had saved the NEWTODAY files from the various betas because that
- would have reminded me of all the things that are new in this latest
- version of Qmodem. Alas, I did not, and John has not done a summary of new
- features (as you'll see from how changed this program is, that's
- understandable -- John has been busy). Suffice it to say for now that the
- program shows significant enhancements. While it is in essence still the
- Qmodem that you are used to, there are many new features, an on-line help
- facilty for both Qinstall and Qmodem itself that is a tour de force, and
- greater speed in many areas (we're going to need to do some Ymodem
- benchmarking again, JK, PO, LW and others). This version has also been
- extensively beta tested, a sign of patience and professionalism for which
- John Friel deserves a great deal of credit. He subjected himself to the
- slings and arrows of many testers over several months and kept at it until
- he was satisfied, notwithstanding "Where's John Friel lately" questions
- from people who used to accuse him of too many releases. So, here it is:
- An excellent program for BBS communications, supporting all the popular
- single file transfer protocols including Ymodem. I hope one of these days
- John will add batch file transfer capabilities and VT-100 emulation to this
- program; those two critical (to me at least) features of a full-fledged
- communications program are still absent. However, neither is relevant to
- calling this BBS and Qmodem serves that purpose very well. John deserves a
- great deal of credit for his hard work, and your support if you decide to
- use the program regularly after you have tried it out.
-
- U/L by Dennis Quinn as a single file. I have re-organized the files into 3
- archives to deal with time constraints on this system and so that if a
- download aborts, you won't be 2/3 of the way into a 244K file.
-
- QFONE220.ARC 87424 09-02-86 K. Brendel's Qmodem.fon util for QM 2.2
- A very powerful QMODEM.FON editor, sorter, etc, now officially sanctioned
- by John Friel, I gather, as THE Qmodem phone utility (at least if I
- understand the note in the Qmodem doc file and the description of the file
- on John's board). Other utilities for Qmodem 2.0 and earlier are not
- likely to work. Several I know won't work have already been deleted, and a
- question has been added to Dir4 for those remaining. Feedback from all of
- you on those would be appreciated, and I suspect we will see updated
- versions of the others soon enough.

- code formatter, ported to DOS.
-
- GO.ARC 10236 09-01-86 GO L = CD \LOTUS (for example): Very nice
- This is interesting. You create a GO.DAT file with any ascii editor and,
- in effect, create synonyms for your CD commands. Thus, the example in
- the description above. For those of you who have lots of little batch
- files on your disk to do the same thing, this program could help you get
- rid of them, but I'd much rather use CED/PCED synonyms to to the same thing
- as those become part of DOS itself, rather than loading an external
- program. C source included.
-
- PUSHFILE.ARC 12288 09-01-86 Push file on "stack" before changing:safer
- This is probably particularly useful for programmers who are constantly
- modifying and recompiling code to get something to work or to revise a
- program. This, in effect, is an easy way to keep backups of the code you
- are modifying, by "push"ing old versions onto a stack (the program
- automatically names them in sequence) so you can always go back and find
- your last good copy before you screwed up. However, its use extends beyond
- programmers to anyone who is modifying files and wants to store earlier
- versions. Take a look. This one is easier to use then to explain.
-
- CPRINT40.ARC 27648 09-01-86 Print multiple files/both sides page v4.0
- There is another program called CPRINT9 by Dan Doman with which this one
- should not be confused, although they are somewhat similar in function.
- Both programs print multiple files with headers. This one adds the ability
- to print on both sides of the paper. It's syntax is also less obscure than
- CPRINT9 and it has an optional full-screen mode so you don't have to
- remember a lot of command line switches if you don't want to. Hmm... makes
- this all sound pretty good, doesn't it?
-
- LITLBK11.ARC 43648 09-01-86 Flee's Address Book 1.1/E-Z to use & v.good
- Good things often come in small packages, and here's another. Kenn Flee,
- author of the excellent QFILER and FILECAT packages (among others), has
- also written a little gem of a name and address data base system. It's
- fast and clean, with the normal address fields, one for a phone number (I'd
- really like 2 -- one for home, one for office), a classification field
- where you can identify categories of your own choosing, and a comments
- field. Sort capabilities are fine, the report capabilities are adequate,
- and it can print labels, etc. All in all, a very nice program for simple
- name and address database requirements. One suggestion for the next
- version: The ability to print the reports to an ascii file on disk so they
- can be imported into other database programs.

- UNIX-DOC.ARC 39273 09-01-86 AT&T's Beginner's Guide to Unix 11/85 ed2
- Kernighan's Unix for Beginners, 2d edition, November 1985. I'm not a

- You draw your own conclusions as to how much value has really been added to

- claims:
-
- * Cleaner looking Pulldown Menus
- * 23 line editing screen (two more than 1.2B)
